Dylan Chalmers is a multidisciplinary designer who’s work spans a wide range of mediums–photography, typography, and illustration–often accentuated by self-crafted modular grids. Intrigued by the interplay of lines and shape, these grids are quickly becoming a defining element of his style.

Oramics: Sine & Sound is a response to the ‘Line’ brief of the 2024 ISTD annual competition. The publication explores the art form of Oramics created by Daphne Oram in 1962 in which sound was created by making marks on transparent media: for generation by painting waveforms onto glass slides, and in control by marking 10 parallel 35mm filmstrips. Through this innovation, the evolution of electronic music was set in motion, bringing us the ever developing genre of music.

Activism is an effective way to bring about social or political change, in this case the aim was to promote climate activism. An event was organised consisting of performances and local guest speakers. By curating this event, it meant that all touch-points could be covered and connected. The addition of guest speakers from the local area helped to reach a wider audience and inform all those attending. The main theme of the project was disruption with the focus of displaying this disruption through overlapping, interconnected pieces of typography in varied mediums.

THE BEAST

Event posters and merch for Dundee based band Jutebox. For the most part all of these designs use consistent typography, colour and layout to create a more coherent branding style. The same can be said for the currated typeface designed for embroidered merch.

For the shape shifters and groovy movers, Pitis represents complete self expression and unity.

For my dissertation I looked into the subject of art therapy. Examining current art therapy services and investigating how valuable art can be as a therapeutic tool for students and young people suffering from stress and anxiety. Along with this research, branded collage-based workshops were set up for more conclusive insights. Through organising these local workshops, the intention was to delve deeper into the benefits of art therapy for students within a secure environment, with the primary objective of supporting young people's and student's mental well-being.

CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS

Range of double exposure experiments as part of a photography module. Looking to interact with the varying sharp lines seen within more brutalist architecture. Taking more cliche and simple buildings to create more abstract pieces of design.
